Wonders Of The Night

[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/wonders-of-the-night/thumbs/thumbs_d7h1937-edit.jpg]Milky Way Gold
As the last of the series from the "dark side", I wanted to point out that there is no sunrise or sunset related to this capture. The gold light comes entirely from the city lights of Alamosa. Best of all though is a wondrous scene above the town with the Milky Way dominating the sky. This image was taken in the San Luis Valley near the town of Crestone, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/wonders-of-the-night/thumbs/thumbs_d7h1796.jpg]Mountain Pass Illumination
On a new moon, you'd think the skies would be pretty dark. But on a high mountain pass, light comes from a variety of sources - including the vehicles passing by, planes, meteors, distant cities, and even the stars. My favorite part is that above timberline this time of year has so much snow cover. In this shot, a large truck begins the descent from the top of the pass to join up with an interstate highway shown in the bottom left. This 41 second long-exposure image was captured on top of Loveland Pass and the Continental Divide west of Denver, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/wonders-of-the-night/thumbs/thumbs_jupiterbells-edit.jpg]Jupiter Bells
Aspen leaves shine bright while the planet Jupiter streaks across the night-time sky. With clear skies and a partial moon, I decided it was time to go for a unique approach with my first visit to the Maroon Bells - one capturing the streaking stars over the peaks. The amazing lighting and active wildlife made this an incredible experience - one I highly recommend. This image comes from 15 - 3 minute exposures taken from Maroon Lake above the town of Aspen, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/wonders-of-the-night/thumbs/thumbs_d3h2089-edit-edit.jpg]Overnight Bouquet
This 60 second long-exposure image was taken from Loveland Pass west of Georgetown, Colorado on a really cold night - right after the pass re-opened from a winter storm closure.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/wonders-of-the-night/thumbs/thumbs_dsc7676-edit.jpg]Colors of a Colorado Overnight
This 15 second exposure was taken at the top of a peak named Cupid (13,117 feet) after a hike from Loveland Pass, Colorado. By the way, the glow you see is definitely not a sunrise or sunset. It comes from light pollution from Denver's city lights some 50 miles away.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/wonders-of-the-night/thumbs/thumbs_mayflowergulchstartrails3-edit.jpg]Mountain Cabin With A View
Stars rotate around the north star in this night-time high-mountain long-exposure image taken after a hike up above timberline near Copper Mountain, Colorado. The old ghost town of Boston was once very active in Mayflower Gulch thanks to all the mining activity - but not any more. The old rustic cabin provided an old west foreground that contrasted well with the rugged peaks in this starry mountain scene.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/wonders-of-the-night/thumbs/thumbs_d7h1798-edit.jpg]Star Light, Star Bright
A shooting star appears over the Rocky Mountains in this 40 second long-exposure shot from the top of Loveland Pass west of Denver, Colorado. It seemed a bit early for the upcoming Lyrids Meteor Shower, but I was happy to catch it. Part of the Milky Way appears in the top center while clouds in the distance reflect some glow from the city lights in Summit County - adding even more color to the scene.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/wonders-of-the-night/thumbs/thumbs_d3h2693-edit.jpg]Feeding The Passion
I'm not sure where the drive comes from to do things like this... but it sure is fun to see where it takes me. This image was shot after a cold, super windy snowshoe trek to a peak called Cupid (elevation 13,117 feet) above Loveland Pass, Colorado with friends.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/wonders-of-the-night/thumbs/thumbs_dsc4041-edit.jpg]Light Trails On Loveland Pass
I went up into the hills really early in the morning to see the Leonid Meteor Shower. I figured high up on Loveland Pass would be a good spot to get away from the lights of Denver and to see lots of sky. Unfortunately, the meteor show was pretty light. I saw a few, but didn’t capture any. So instead, I just went for a few night shots I had in mind. I’ve always liked the starry night skies over snow covered peaks and this moonless night was spectacular. I wasn’t surprised at all to see several other nuts at the top watching the skies with me. Pretty crazy though – considering it was winter, it was cold, and it was 4 am. Even with the challenges though, I was able to capture this long exposure shot (5 minutes) with a truck going over the top of the pass that really lit things up!

Snow Ice And Water

[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_d3h6070_1_2_3_4.jpg]Glorious Indian Peaks Alpenglow
If you spend enough time in the backcountry, you have a chance of seeing nature where everything goes right… where all the planets seem to line up just perfect. This Sunday morning at Lake Isabelle in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area was just such a morning. It was an amazing, beautiful, and eventful morning hike.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_dsc7805-edit.jpg]Transitions
The snow covered rocks highlight the beautiful waters of the South Arkansas River in the Rocky Mountains. With the winter ice now melted, this spring-time river flows freely downstream. In addition to showing the transition of seasons, I really liked how this image captured the transitions in the water from turbulent white water to clear and back again. This image was taken on the North Fork of the South Arkansas River near Maysville, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_dsc6689-edit.jpg]Waterfalls On The Blue
Beautiful waterfalls flow in early spring on the Blue River between Silverthorne and Kremling, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_dsc8087_88_89_90_91-edit.jpg]Winter Mountain Dream - Revisited
Well known for it's calm water reflections in summer, Dream Lake shows a much colder side in winter. I really liked how the ripples in the ice cast reflections much like the ripples on water would look - only with a frozen winter twist. I actually came to this spot with the same plan back in November. This time, I came back better prepared and although I had lots of wind, I had much better results. These images were taken just after sunrise at Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_dsc4778-edit.jpg]Winter Snow At Red Rocks Amphitheater
On this winter morning just after sunrise, new snow covers the bench seats of the amphitheater at Red Rocks Park in Morrison, Colorado. During the summer, Red Rocks amphitheater lives up to it's reputation as one of the best outdoor concert venues with crowds regularly filling the area to see top name artists perform. This image shows one of the park's named formations in the background, "Ship Rock" which is one of two similar red rock formations located on each side of the amphitheater.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_dsc1777_78_79_80_81.jpg]Devil's Punchbowl
The waterfalls at Devil's Punchbowl are a treat for people navigating over Schofield Pass between Crested Butte and Marble, Colorado. As this area is known for its challenging 4-Wheeling, getting here can be half the fun. The toughest parts of Schofield Pass are both above and below this point and people have been killed just above. So aside from all the death and danger parts, this was definitely one beautiful waterfall!
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_d3h0774_hdr-edit-2.jpg]Wintry Logs At Lake Odessa
Lazy logs settle in for a cold winter at the downstream end of Lake Odessa in Rocky Mountain National Park. Little Matterhorn appears in the distance just before cloud covered Notchtop Mountain and other peaks. You wouldn't know it, but this image was taken at sunrise - although the clouds blocked any of the beautiful morning light. Oh well, next time...
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_d3h0464_5_6-edit.jpg]Break In The Falls
Random logs create a small interruption in the waterfall. And with the river "really running" the water made for a spectacular sight. This image was taken at the Alluvial Fan Falls in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_d3h5386-edit.jpg]Return To Paradise
The Ruby Mountains appear just above a pond at the top of Paradise Divide near Crested Butte, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/snow-ice-and-water/thumbs/thumbs_d3h6253-edit.jpg]Bridal Veil Pool Of Jade
The bottom of a big waterfall sure can be a pretty scene in my book - even when it flows more gently in autumn. This single exposure was taken from the bottom of 365 foot Bridal Veil Falls near Telluride, Colorado.

Aspen Gold

[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/aspen-gold/thumbs/thumbs_dsc8700-edit.jpg]Private Gold on Ohio Pass
Private property frames this wonderful golden scene on Ohio Pass near Crested Butte.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/aspen-gold/thumbs/thumbs_d3h5782.jpg]Aspen Sunset Over Bear Lake
Having been to Bear Lake many times, I've come to appreciate when I can get lucky with fantastic conditions like this - on my very first attempt at a location. This single exposure was captured above Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/aspen-gold/thumbs/thumbs_d3h6964.jpg]Colorado Color Palette
On my way out of Telluride, I really wanted to take a route more interesting than the highway around the mountains. I'd planned on taking exciting Imogene Pass, but with the new snow (and it having officially closed), I decided I'd go with something a bit more tame. Ophir Pass still looked a bit challenging as the snow line had dipped below the top of the pass the night before, but I was betting there wouldn't be too much snow up top. Sure enough, it worked out awesome! Incredible colors lined the valley down to the town of Ophir with snow on top of the peaks as well. Thanks to some great timing, it sure was a gorgeous scene! This single exposure was taken from the west side of Ophir Pass between Telluride and Silverton, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/aspen-gold/thumbs/thumbs_d3h7373-edit.jpg]Golden Mountain Majesty
After a couple days of winter-like conditions in Silverton, I was itching to get out and see if any aspen color remained. But with all the new snow, I lost a lot of my nerve in exploring the jeep trails. In fact, I had to laugh as I passed a couple of the trailheads I had in mind for exploring as they were covered with what looked like a couple feet of new snow! I was hoping I'd at least be able to score some color and a good reflection at a spot I had in mind right off Red Mountain Pass. Sure enough, I really liked how the vivid orange color contrasted with the new snow. And when the first light crept down the mountain and hit the aspen leaves, the color seemed to come alive like a light switch had been turned on. This single exposure image was taken at Crystal Lake on Red Mountain Pass between Ouray and Silverton, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/aspen-gold/thumbs/thumbs_d3h0314_5_6_7_8.jpg]Gold And Snow On Dallas Divide
This classic view of the Sneffels Range looks especially pretty after an overnight blanket of snow. I would have liked all the scrub oak to show their colors, but hey, the Aspens are not a bad alternative. These images were taken near the top of Dallas Divide near Ridgway, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/aspen-gold/thumbs/thumbs_dsc2137_38_39_40_41-edit-edit.jpg]Crystal River Mill
The Crystal Mill stands as a reminder of the people who explored, lived, and worked in the old west. Back in the day, the mill used an advanced water turbine to compress air for powering tools and other machinery. Today, it's argued as the most photographed site in Colorado. I don't know about that, but it sure looked pretty with the golden aspens. This image was taken in the historic ghost town of Crystal on Schofield Pass above Marble, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/aspen-gold/thumbs/thumbs_d3h6913-edit.jpg]Telluride Winter Over Fall
I couldn't get over the combination of colors in Telluride. And with the new snowy weather, I was in awe! I thought a view with a passing gondola gave the winter and fall elements a neat perspective so I took this image from Mountain Village near Telluride, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/aspen-gold/thumbs/thumbs_dsc1548_49_50-edit.jpg]Golden Seclusion
The Kebler Pass road winds its way through large groves of golden colored aspen trees with Marcellina Mountain appearing in the background. This picture was taken during the peak of the fall foliage season between Crested Butte and Paonia, Colorado.

Natures Flowers

[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_d3h4907-edit-2-edit.jpg]Sunflowers Forever
Mother Nature provided calm winds and some really pretty rays of light in this wonderful field of sunflowers. Even with the beautiful conditions, I blended two exposures in ps to get this final composition. This image was taken near Denver International Airport in Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_d3h4618-edit-edit.jpg]Blind Date With Dorothy
This image was taken from a downstream extension of Lake Dorothy (elevation 12,100 feet). I was able to capture first light on Mount Neva in the Indian Peaks Wilderness west of Nederland, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_dsc3824-edit.jpg]Red Magic Morning
A brightly colored Daylily known as "Red Magic" looks especially pretty after an overnight rainfall. This image was taken in our neighborhood in Littleton, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_d3h4590-edit.jpg]Inspired Expression
One of the things I really enjoyed about Crested Butte was all the painters. It really gave me a different perspective on capturing nature's beauty without any mechanical or electronic technology. Here, a talented painter named Stephanie Birdsall reproduces the colorful details of some of Crested Butte's most beautiful flowers - something that clearly stopped me in my tracks. These images were taken on the Gothic Road near Crested Butte, Colorado right before the start of the Wildflower Festival.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_d3h3875.jpg]Crested Butte In Bloom
As this area was one of the reasons for my return to the Butte, it sure was great to see everything come together. Cloudless western skies with a few clouds floating over Mount Crested Butte was just perfect. It sure made up for the dud of a sunset the night before anyway... And with Lupines looking gorgeous (and relatively light winds), the scene was incredible! This image was taken with the last light of the day hitting Mount Crested Butte from Washington Gulch near the town of Crested Butte, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_dsc8961-edit-edit.jpg]Macro Flower Beauty
Sometimes the smallest things can be the prettiest. This tiny little cluster of pink buds blooms with pretty white flowers. It's so small, I almost walked right past it. This early spring image was taken in Hudson Gardens in Littleton, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_d3h5890.jpg]Columbine Bouquet
A gorgeous cluster of Columbine grow in the seclusion of the deep woods - or so they wish. The Wildflower Festival has given many the chance to see such beauty. As part of the festival, professional photographer JC Leacock led the 4x4 Backcountry Photo Adventure and selected this location as our last for the day. This image was taken in Crested Butte, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_d3h4369_70_71_72_73-edit.jpg]Lake Irwin Wildflowers
Wildflowers decorate a log in the foreground of this wonderful morning view of the Ruby Range. This image was taken right before the start of the Wildflower Festival from Lake Irwin near Crested Butte, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_dsc9949-edit.jpg]Rings Of Beauty
This rose from Hudson Gardens in Littleton, Colorado really shined for a picture.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_d3h6200_1_2_3_4.jpg]Wildflowers And Waterfalls In The Indian Peaks
After catching a gorgeous sunrise from Lake Isabelle, I headed down the trail just in time to catch this shot before the sunlight hit the water. This image was taken during a hike in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area above the town of Ward, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/natures-flowers/thumbs/thumbs_d3h5930_1_2_3_4-edit.jpg]Wildflower Grove
There was something about the aspen groves of Kebler Pass that really looked pretty. And this time seeing it filled with Colorado Wildflowers was just amazing! My only regret was that I waited until the end of my trip to go see a trail on Kebler Pass. Gothic was awesome, but seeing the wildflowers in and near the Aspens is something you just have to see to believe. This picture was taken on the Cliff Creek trail off of Kebler Pass west of Crested Butte, Colorado.

Beautiful Light

[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h0549_hdr.jpg]Rocky Mountain Sunrise From Bear Lake
For the longest time, this image was nothing more than just a vision of a dream. What if I could get an awesome sunrise reflecting from my favorite spot on Bear Lake, I thought. Back in May of 2010, it sure didn't seem like it would be that difficult... Well, some 6 months and 17 early morning trips to Bear Lake later I finally hit paydirt. Finally, my dream of the Ultimate Bear Lake Sunrise has become a reality!! And yes, now I'm wearing a huge smile.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_dsc4474-edit.jpg]Bands Of Morning Color
Some outrageous color appears in this sunrise viewed over Denver. This image was taken from behind a leafless tree in Red Rocks Park in Morrison, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_dsc3724_5_6_7_8-edit.jpg]Misty Morning Sunrise
This morning's sunrise made for a good opportunity to reflect on all the things in life that are worth appreciating. This HDR image was taken in Chatfield State Park in Littleton, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_dsc4521_2_3_4_5-edit.jpg]Classic Garden of the Gods
Glowing Garden of the Gods provides the ultimate foreground for Pikes Peak at 14,110 feet. Two of the park's most prominent rock structures, North and South Gateway Rocks (and Pikes Peak) are shown here glowing in the early morning alpenglow. These images were taken near the east entrance to Garden of the Gods Park near Colorado Springs, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h2138_hdr-edit.jpg]Frozen Veins of Fire
I was looking to test out my new gps so I did another quick sunrise trip to Dream Lake on the snowshoes last weekend. The gps worked great but instead of getting the glow on the peaks, Mother Nature served up some colorful skies to the east. That's okay with me though... There's nothing like the warm colors of sunrise mixed with ultra cold, smooth ice. This HDR image was captured at Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h7034_5_6_7_8-edit-2.jpg]Mesa Arch Sunrise
Sunbeams appear over the La Sal Mountains, Buck Canyon, and the Colorado River just after sunrise. These images were taken from Mesa Arch after a short early morning hike in Canyonlands National Park, Utah. One point to mention is the bright orange color on the underside of the arch. While it may look strange, it actually comes from light reflected off the rocks in the foreground. Makes for a pretty neat scene!
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h3217_8_9.jpg]Tip Of The Tooth
This final capture from my morning hike shows the first light hitting The Sawtooth - a mountain with an elevation of 13,700 feet. This view really caught my eye because I had never before looked down at The Sawtooth. A small detail for sure, but it just was a sign that I was up high on a really big mountain. This image was taken after an early morning hike to a ridgeline between Mount Evans and Mount Spaulding near Idaho Springs, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h7538-edit.jpg]Nature's Illumination
A small beam of light penetrates the depths of Upper Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona. As a side note, I thought our visit here was at least as cool as I'd hoped - and that says a lot!
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h1166_67_68_69_70-edit.jpg]Rocky Mountain Reflection
Hallet's Peak and Flattop Mountain and a layer of clouds glow pink with the early morning alpenglow that appears as the sun's light crests the flat plains of eastern Colorado. I was planning on shooting from Bear Lake (once again), but the lack of clouds towards Longs Peak made this the prettier scene - in my view. This image was taken from Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park above the town of Estes Park, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_dsc4158_59_60_61_62.jpg]Cathedral Sunrise
Rock formations including Cathedral Rock and Cathedral Spires dominate the skyline in this colorful sunrise shot from Garden of the Gods Park near Colorado Springs, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_dsc3315-edit.jpg]Colorado Morning Glow
A colorful sunrise appears over Denver from behind a leafless tree. This image was taken from Red Rocks Park in Morrison, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h6045_6_7_8_9.jpg]Flow Below The Glow
An exceptionally pretty morning at Lake Isabelle shows waters rushing below the lake while alpenglow hits the peaks and clouds above. These images were taken in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area above the town of Ward, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h7460-edit.jpg]The Navajo Spirit
A rock shaped very much like a face seems stunned as a ray of light takes on a character of its own. This image was taken in a much anticipated visit to Upper Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona. As beautiful as they were, Canyonlands and Monument Valley were just sideshows to me. This was the main event and I'm thrilled to get such a cool shot!
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h6702_3_4_5_6-edit.jpg]Glimpse From The Clouds
From the base of Mount Evans, there are a few chances to see the peak. Until then, you don't really know what the weather will be like. I was lucky enough to find some goats early in the evening. But once the clouds moved in, that game was over. I tried moving up to peak above the parking area and found some sunset light occasionally breaking through with a hint of light. Twice, the clouds broke up just enough to see this wonderful scene from 14,200+ feet before closing up and disappearing.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_dsc3948_4_5_6_7-edit.jpg]Glowing Clouds Over Glacier Gorge
Colorful glowing clouds highlight Glacier Gorge shortly after sunrise. This image was taken from Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/sunrise-and-sunset/thumbs/thumbs_d3h7390_1_2_3_4.jpg]Navajo Glow
Navajo monuments called "West Mitten Butte" and "Big Indian" bask in a surprise shot of late evening sunlight. This image was taken in the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in Arizona.

Call Of The Wild

[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/call-of-the-wild/thumbs/thumbs_d3h6460.jpg]Mutant Two-Headed Goat
Mountain Goat kids reminded me of a gene splicing gone horribly wrong. Fortunately, they were just playing... but they looked so cute! This image was taken near the top of Mount Evans above the town of Idaho Springs, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/call-of-the-wild/thumbs/thumbs_dsc4704.jpg]Hunting with Harris Hawks
A Harris Hawk scouts for prey during a HawkQuest members only field event. This event featured volunteers carrying 6 Harris Hawks through the brush of Bear Creek Lake Park looking for prey. When we located one, the hawks would then pursue the prey as a team. It was an awesome event that we were lucky to be able to see. This image was taken in Bear Creek Lake Park in Lakewood, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/call-of-the-wild/thumbs/thumbs_dsc5656-edit.jpg]Rocky Mountain Pit Stop
Even Bull Elk deserve a chance to take a break. This guy looked really cool - laying down in with all the summertime wildflowers. This image was taken in the high alpine tundra of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/call-of-the-wild/thumbs/thumbs_dsc7218-edit.jpg]Mountain Majesty
This adult female goat is still carrying the last of her old winter coat. She came up the mountain in a herd of 20-25 goats before crossing the parking lot to hang out by the Castle In The Sky. This capture was taken right before she crossed the parking lot at an elevation of 14,130 feet near the peak of Mount Evans in Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/call-of-the-wild/thumbs/thumbs_d3h6532-edit.jpg]Bighorns Back From The Brink
Having come close to extinction back around the year 1900, the Bighorn Sheep population has recovered nicely - thanks to conservation efforts from groups including the Boy Scouts. And unlike the Mountain Goats of Colorado that were transplanted, it's interesting to know that Bighorn Sheep originally crossed over the Bering land bridge from Siberia some 750,000 years ago. I was very excited to see these guys so close as they're normally very timid. But not this time! This image was taken on Mount Evans above the town of Idaho Springs, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/call-of-the-wild/thumbs/thumbs_d3h1115-edit.jpg]Bringin' Home The Bacon
An American Bald Eagle shows off his latest catch before heading off to eat his next meal. This image was taken at Lake Couer d'Alene in Idaho.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/call-of-the-wild/thumbs/thumbs_dsc2133-edit.jpg]Mountain Goat Meditation
An adult Mountain Goat looks content as he relaxes on a warm spring day. I don't see any teeth from a full on smile, but I do see a big grin! This image was taken near the top of Mount Evans in Colorado at an elevation of 14,130 feet. On this day, I was really lucky to be able to get so close to them . Such a treat!
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/call-of-the-wild/thumbs/thumbs_dsc3583-edit.jpg]No Shy Marmots Here
So I've been hoping for good pictures of Marmots for a little while now. There are lots of them on Mount Evans, but they seem shy compared to the cute little guys on Trail Ridge Road. As a member, I got to shoot this picture during a HawkQuest Photo Shoot at Bear Creek Lake Park in Lakewood, Colorado. HawkQuest is a birds of prey rescue and education program based in Parker, Colorado. Thanks to Kin Quitugua and the HawkQuest organization for the wonderful opportunity to shoot their rescued birds in a natural setting.

Ok, so it wasn't is easy as it looks, but they sure look like a bunch of posers. A Mountain Goat Nanny and Kids pause for a few captures near the top of Mount Evans above Idaho Springs, Colorado.

I've been to a few places where my fisheye lens has worked well, but non seem to work as well as at a hot air balloon event. Here, I got a close encounter with a hot air balloon named Ultra World at the Balloons N Varooms 2010 event in Ridgway, Colorado. A little anticipation and some good luck got me a "front row seat" and what turned out to be my favorite shot from the festival. The balloons were all flying in to "pluck a duck" from the pond but this balloon ended up heading pretty much right for me. Big thanks to all the participants in Ridgway for a fantastic event!

No, it's not Albequerque, but it sure was pretty seeing all the balloons sharing the sky with the San Juans. This image was taken during the Balloons N Varooms 2010 event in Ridgway, Colorado.

This composition with multiple balloons and peaks from the Sneffels Range really caught my eye. In this shot, the Locopelli hot air balloon team takes off during the Balloons N Varooms event in Ridgway, Colorado.

Life on top of the world... It doesn't get much better than this - hot air ballooning in the rugged, snow capped peaks of the San Juan Mountains. This image was taken during the Balloons N Varooms 2010 event in Ridgway, Colorado.
[img src=http://www.coloradocaptures.com/wp-content/flagallery/human-nature/thumbs/thumbs_d3h1537-edit.jpg]Steer Wrestling Commitment
Cowboys compete for cash prizes in a Steer Wrestling rodeo event. Having shot the rodeo inside during the Denver Stock Show back in January, I was interested to see what I could do with the better light of an outdoor event. I still have a lot to learn about catching the action, but I did get a few sharp captures. These images were taken at the Evergreen Rodeo in Evergreen, Colorado.

I was fortunate to have listened in on the pilots briefing before this morning's balloon launch where I learned of the contest. The teams competed to pick up the most duck decoys from the pond which made for a great chance to see the teams lining up to pluck a duck. Like the Kemo Sabe balloon team shown here, most teams floated in from the left side. This image was taken during the Balloons N Varooms 2010 event in Ridgway, Colorado.
