Colorado Moonlight Madness – Silverton

A Perigee Moon casts light on a wintry mountain scene bright enough to look a bit like daytime. In fact, this is the biggest moon of the year – so I’ve heard. This 6 second exposure was taken along the frozen Animas River near Silverton, Colorado. Dome Mountain and King Solomon Mountain appear at the bottom while constellations including Orion “The Hunter” and Canis Major (Orion’s Big Dog) and star Sirius appear in the sky above.
As a side note, I unfortunately broke a leg taking this picture (above). Bummer! Good news is that it was just a tripod leg, but painful nonetheless!

Tracks lead up the hill toward a wonderful night-time winter scene in the San Juan Mountains. This 13 second exposure was taken near Silverton, Colorado under the bright light of the biggest moon of the year. King Solomon Mountain appears in this image below Canis Major (aka Orion’s Big Dog). By the way, I stuck the two remaining legs from my tripod (with the recently broken leg) directly into the deep snow for this shot. Good thing for deep snow!
